Exploration Center Volunteers for Fall/Winter

Our Exploration Center and Aquarium in Newport is seeking volunteers to assist on various dates and times throughout the fall and winter seasons. The center will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from October 2 to April 30 from 10 am to 4 pm. Volunteers are needed to interact with guests at exhibits, talk about and handle the various small marine critters that make Narragansett Bay their home, assist with crafts and other projects and more. Come meet the staff, the critters and have some fun on the weekends this fall!

Volunteers are required to undergo a training in advance to learn about the exhibits and how to interact with the visitors.  The trainings are scheduled for Saturday, October 9 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and Saturday, January 8 from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. You only have to attend one training date and you will begin your shifts after you undergo training.

Requirements
Volunteers must come in for their assigned shift and must attend one of the training dates in order to work at the center. Please be honest up front -- if you know this is a commitment you cannot meet, please do not sign up. To keep the aquarium open on weekends in the fall and winter, we need reliable and hard working people who can help out on a consistent basis.

Volunteers must be over 16 years old. You must be able to stand on your feet during the entire shift and have reliable transportation to Newport. Volunteers must wear the docent uniform of khaki on the bottom and a Save The Bay shirt on top (we will provide you with a shirt). You must also attend one of the scheduled training sessions. All volunteers will also undergo a background check.

Dates Volunteers Are Needed
Volunteers may choose to work a whole day (10-4) or a half day shift (10-1 or 1-4).  Please note that you may not receive your first choice for time on a shift if we are under-staffed another shift.

October 2010: 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31

November 2010: 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28

December 2010: 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31

January 2011: 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30

February 2011: 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27

March 2011: 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27

April 2011: 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 30
